Sen. Cannella Announces Senate Fellow Added in Capitol Office

Wednesday, December 13, 2017

State Senator Anthony Cannella (R-Ceres) is pleased to announce a new addition to his Capitol office. Jared Smith is a member of the 2017-18 California Fellows program, who was recently assigned to the Sacramento office and is working as a full-time staff member in service to the 12th Senate District constituents.

Jared was born and raised in Orange County, California. After graduating from La Habra High School, he attended California Lutheran University (CLU) in Thousand Oaks, California. While earning degrees in Political Science and Criminal Justice and a minor in Philosophy, Jared spent his time at CLU immersed in politics and policy.

On campus, Jared served his fellow students as a member of CLU’s student government, and played offensive tackle for the Kingsmen Football team. Off campus, Jared served as the State Treasurer of the California College Republicans, where he helped work to elect Republicans throughout California. In the summers between college classes, Jared worked in a Congressional district office and as a Research Intern for the Hudson Institute’s Center for Political-Military Analysis. Prior to coming to Sacramento, Jared was a Legislative Affairs Intern with the United States Agency for International Development.

“We are excited to have Jared join our office, and know he will be a positive addition to the staff,” said Senator Cannella. “The Senate Fellows program is a mutually beneficial arrangement, allowing them to learn the ins and outs of a legislative office, while providing the office with their unique knowledge and energy.”

Fellows experience a broad range of activities conducted in busy Senate offices. Responsibilities include researching public policy issues, helping develop legislative proposals, analyzing and staffing legislation, assisting with constituent inquiries and casework, participating in meetings and many other tasks. Each are paid a stipend and receive benefits. Applicants must be 20 years old and a graduate with a four-year degree. The deadline to apply for the 2018-19 class is February 12, 2018.
