Senator Anthony Cannella (R-Ceres) today issued the following statement regarding the discovery of improper vacation payouts and hidden funds at the California Department of Parks and Recreation:
“The actions of the management at State Parks is reprehensible. California’s park system has long been the envy of the rest of the nation. Because of some very tough budget decisions, we have made drastic cutbacks that have resulted in reduced services and hours. I met with management at the department to see what could be done to save the parks in my district and was told that the department did not have the funds to keep them open.
“Knowing the stewards of our parks system were purposefully hiding funds while parks were being threatened is simply mind-boggling. Governor Brown is taking the correct action in removing those responsible, and I hope a full investigation into the department’s finances begins immediately.”
