State Senator Anthony Cannella (R-Ceres) issued the following statement following the release of “Addressing Nitrate in California’s Drinking Water,” prepared by the University of California, Davis:
“Californians deserve clean drinking water. In the last several years, California growers and ranchers have invested millions of dollars to develop responsible production practices, and I know the agricultural community is committed to the continued implementation of best management practices to prevent the contamination of groundwater supplies. Many of these techniques are new and should be included in the report’s review process. As chairman of the Senate Agriculture Committee, I look forward to working with the agricultural community and regulatory agencies to address the issues raised by this report.
“The conclusions of the report certainly raise the importance of constructing above ground water storage systems as a means to further ensure a safe and reliable water supply for all Californians. We must place a high priority on promoting the passage of the water bond this year to address water quality and supply issues.”
