State Senator Anthony Cannella (R-Ceres) today announced that he has suspended his request of the Joint Legislative Audit Committee (JLAC) to audit the Employment Development Department (EDD). The audit request sought to review the statuses of clearing backlogs and processing new unemployment insurance claims; implementing recommendations made by the State Auditor’s past work; meeting federal performance standards continuously; and reviewing justifications for closing regional offices. Another goal of the audit was to find the root cause of serious problems that have persisted for over a decade within EDD.
“After meeting with EDD and the Governor’s office, I have been assured that EDD has the resources to remedy the problems the people of California experienced in receiving unemployment insurance payments over the past year. As a result, I am suspending my audit request,” said Cannella. “I am concerned that an audit would divert already strained resources and adversely affect the process. I expect to receive regular updates on the steps they are taking to remedy their systemic issues, however, and I am prepared to reinstate that request if I do not see sufficient progress.”
The initial request was made last month and was to be considered at the next JLAC hearing on March 12, 2014. Cannella is a member of JLAC and has made government transparency a priority.
