Cannella's Capitol Update

Cannella Column: January 2017

Monday, January 30, 2017

Friends and neighbors,

January brings with it a Legislature in full swing at the Capitol. Legislation is introduced, committee members are selected along with some committee hearings, and gubernatorial appointments confirmed. Not to mention the Governor introducing his budget proposal and delivering his State of the State Address.

For me, I was honored to be selected as a new member of the Committee on Governmental Organization, while continue to serve as the Vice Chair of Transportation Committee, the Vice Chair of Rules Committee, and a member of the Energy, Utilities and Communications Committee.

Help keep your friends and neighbors informed about what’s going on in Sacramento and around the 12th Senate District by forwarding this email so they can sign up to receive my eNewsletters, as well. You can also follow me on Facebook and Twitter for the latest news and updates.

Sincerely,
Anthony Cannella

Eighteen Fellows will be selected in May after an initial screening of applications and a subsequent panel interview of finalists.

Have a Heart

Image of a HeartFebruary is American Heart Month to raise awareness of heart disease. It’s not just men who suffer from cardio vascular disease, it is the #1 killer of women too. February 3rd is National Wear Red Day, so show your support by putting on those ruby red shoes, red tie or suit, and then know your own risks by visiting the American Heart Association.

My Legislation, Your Legislation

So far, I have crafted over a dozen pieces of legislation to make important changes that will benefit our district, improve our business climate and help California to continue growing. Many of these ideas come from you, my constituents, through business meetings and listening to community leaders throughout my district. You can view my current and past legislative measures by going my website.

California’s Budget

Every January, California’s Governor sends his proposed budget to legislators outlining his priorities for the year. The Legislature then holds hearings and then begin to weave in their priorities until we have some sort of consensus before the fiscal year-end in June. Generally, I was pleased that Governor Brown took a fairly cautious approach, and I am hopeful we can start to address some of California’s shortfalls, such as building more water storage, improving our transportation system, and streamlining regulations so we can create more jobs.

Confirming Gubernatorial Appointees

As the Vice Chair of the Senate Rules Committee, I had the opportunity to question Randy Fiorini, the Governor’s Chair of the Delta Stewardship Council, on effecting important water policy that encourages more storage and a focus on the water needs of Californians. Ultimately, the Senate confirmed Mr. Fiorini to another term, and I was happy to add my vote.
