Sen. Cannella Announces 12th District "There Ought to Be a Law" Contest

Tuesday, October 7, 2014

Senator Anthony Cannella (R-Ceres) today announced his “There Ought to a Be a Law” contest to provide constituents the opportunity to present ideas for new legislation or repeal an existing law. Senator Cannella will personally sponsor legislation from winning submissions. Last year’s contest resulted in SB 1151, which promoted safer driving in school zones by enforcing an additional fine for violators. The bill received unanimous support in the Senate and Assembly, but was ultimately vetoed by Governor Brown.

“Some of the best ideas we have for legislation have come from members of the community that see the need for a change,” said Senator Cannella. “This contest allows citizens to gain first-hand experience in the law making process and improve California government.”

The deadline for submission is December 15, and the winners will also be invited up to Sacramento to testify at a hearing on their bill.
