Senator Anthony Cannella (R-Ceres) today issued the following statement regarding Governor Jerry Brown’s State of the State address:
“I was pleased to hear Governor Brown begin this year’s State of the State by addressing the need for state government to prepare for future uncertainties. While we have seen a tremendous increase in revenue, now is not the time to use those funds on new programs that require ongoing spending. The prudent thing to do is invest in our crumbling infrastructure, pay down our debts, and save for the next economic downturn, which is inevitable.
“The Governor also addressed income inequities and a shrinking middle class. We must be doing more to bring good paying jobs not only to California but to those regions, such as my district, that have not realized the same economic recovery as the Bay Area and Southern California.
“We also need to use this opportunity to rebuild our transportation system and find a steady revenue source for transportation funding ongoing. The longer that we postpone coming to a solution, the more it will cost all Californians.
“While Governor Brown rightly highlighted many of the great accomplishments we have made over the past few years, there is much more that we need to do.”
