State Senator Anthony Cannella (R-Ceres) today recognized the admirable lifetime accomplishments of Tony Slaton as his 12th Senate District Man of the Year.
“Tony was born and raised in our community, went on to succeed academically and excel in football, but came back to make a real difference in the lives of our youth,” Senator Cannella said. “He is literally and figuratively someone our young people can look up to and emulate, and I am proud to know Tony and thank him for his service to our area.”
Tony is a third generation Slaton from Merced who graduated from Weaver Elementary and Merced High, went onto USC where he graduated with a Marketing degree and exceled as a Trojan football player before going professional, playing for the Dallas Cowboys and Los Angeles Rams. Mr. Slaton came back to the Central Valley and has been the Director of the Boys and Girls Club of Merced County for over ten years. Many of Tony’s accomplishments at the Club have provided the area youth with new skills and a sense of purpose, encouraging them to succeed in this ever competitive world.
